The randomness of it and the stories about who they spared and why was this new thing that has obviously hit home with many mentally disturbed individuals where being a mass shooter is cooler or even sexier in their minds than being a serial killer who chops people up. There were mass shootings before them but they were the first ones given some dark mysterious trench coat mafia misunderstood outsider legacy. They entered a new pyscho path archetype into the mass cultural zeitgeist really.
